The short answer: for a Lan Ha Bay cruise in 2027, the best months are October and November, then March and April. For Christmas, New Year or Tet (6 February 2027) choose a ship with one price all year, such as Diana (from $178), or Celina, whose price moves only $12 between seasons ($182 high, $170 low). Between roughly June and October, the port authority stops boats sailing when a storm warning is issued. It does not happen often, but it does happen. If you travel then, keep a spare day in Hanoi after the cruise, and ask us about the operator’s weather policy before you book.

Our pick for the holidays is Diana: a 2025 ship with a balcony on every cabin and one price all year, plus an open-air pool and a spa. If you want the newest ship, Celina (built 2026) is not on this list because it charges $12 more in high season, $182 against $170, but that is still a small holiday premium; its downside is size, 62 cabins, so meals run in sittings. For a small ship over the holidays, Orchid Cruise is the better choice, and its four family room types are as many as any ship we sell. Small ships fill first on these dates, so book as soon as your dates are firm. Some operators, Swan among them, add a compulsory gala dinner charge on 24 and 31 December and a surcharge over Tet, which is not in the page price, so message us before booking those nights.
Tet is the busiest week of the year for travel inside Vietnam, and the country’s biggest holiday. Cruises still sail, but roads to the coast are busy, and in Hanoi some restaurants and shops close for a few days. It is a lively time to see the country, but not a quiet one.

In the June to August school holidays, go for Capella. It has a heated swimming pool and a jacuzzi, plus an ocean slide from the deck, and its 48 sqm Harmony Family Suite takes five. Spring and autumn 2027: the best weather
October, November, March and April are high season, so there are no low-season savings. Spend the money on the second day instead. Mon Cheri (from $180) takes you ashore on Cat Ba Island to walk Trung Trang Cave, and every cabin has a balcony. Amanda Luxury (from $147) goes to Quan Y Cave, used during the war. On clear autumn days the sundeck is the reason to be there, so a ship with a balcony on every cabin, such as Indochine (from $139, the cheapest 5-star on Lan Ha), makes the most of it.
